Over NOK 130 million was allocated to humanitarian efforts in Afghanistan in 2006. This amount is being increased to NOK 150 million in 2007 (approx. USD 25 millions). The funds have primarily been used for refugee-related initiatives, mine clearance, human rights work and health initiatives. Support has also been given to the police and judicial system and for immediate response measures in southern Afghanistan. One of Norway’s aims is to strengthen UNAMA’s role in Afghanistan, and it is therefore contributing NOK 11.6 million to ensure that there are sufficient humanitarian personnel on the ground, especially in the provinces (see more agreements).
